Mark Aldritz Dela Virgen

Rocket Scientist*

About Me

I'm an Aerospace Engineer, with a strong background in both electronic hardware and software.

I love model rocketry, electronics, and computers.
I design them, I build them, and if I could, I make them fly (safely!)

I like to solve problems. Have a problem? I'll solve it with what I know, and if I need to, I'm willing to learn what I need to know. Just add funding and stir.

What I do

Model Rocketry

Model Rocketry is fun, and trust me, it's not rocket science.

Senior Design - RTLS

Status: Complete

For my Senior Design project, I've led an interdisciplinary group of Aerospace and Electrical Engineering students to design, test, build, and fly a rocket capable of returning to launch site. We have applied our knowledge of model rocketry, electronics design, and programming to this project.

At our final launch, our rocket LS-3 had a recorded apogee of 3,300 feet, well above the required target altitude of 3,000 feet. Our rocket did not land on the launch site, but of all the teams working with the same objective, ours went the closest at 740 feet from target.

As a result of our efforts, we were selected as one of the top 35 finalists for Spring 2023 Senior Design Showcase, out of 170 teams.

AIAA Rocket League

Status: Complete

I've designed, built and flew many low-power and high power rockets since 2018. I currently hold a National Association of Rocketry Level 1 (NAR L1) Certification, and have helped a lot of students receive certification as well.

WEAR Lab UCF

I work at the Wearable Engineering and Assistive Robotics (WEAR) Lab at University of Central Florida as a Hardware Design Engineer. I design and build custom electronics using PCB EDA tools such as Autodesk EAGLE for wearable devices. It's an opportunity for me to apply some of my skills, and to acquire new skills along the way!

WISE Amplifier Module

Status: In Progress

In collaboration with Dr. Karin Chumbimuni-Torres, this instrumentation amplifier module is to be used with a low cost, wearable microcontroller such as an Adafruit Feather to measure the voltage potential between ultra-sensitive, Ion-Selective Sensor Electrodes (ISE). Their current system uses a Lawson Labs DAC, and in an effort to make the system more portable, this system is designed to amplify those voltage potentials to be read by the microcontroller, which is in the range of millivolts.

I'm currently working on this project independently.

Project MuHASS

Status: In Progress

The Multimodal Human and Ambience Sensor System (MuHASS) is a wearable sensor network utilizing the Adafruit Feather Sense, plus biosensors such as GSR (Galvanic Skin Response) and PPG (Photoplethysmography) sensors. This system is meant to provide a modular, configurable system to measure stress levels on a person, as well as measure environmental conditions to find out about any correlation between stress and the environment.

I am currently leading this project with an interdisciplinary team of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering students, as well as Computer Science students.

CUBE Motor Driver Board

Status: Complete

This is a custom motor driver board for CUBE (Cable-driven Upper Body Exosuit). Based on a reference design, this motherboard accomodates three stepper motor driver modules, powered by a single power supply line. Each motor driver module has their own filtering capacitors, as well as reverse polarity protection and fuses for overcurrent protection..

Other Projects

I've done these projects because I was bored. Seriously.

10AxisFeatherWing

Status: Complete

My first PCB project. I combined a 9 DoF IMU and a pressure sensor to one board to make a 10-Axis (9+1 DoF) Featherwing.
